DataTale 2-Bay FireWire 800, eSATA, USB RAID Enclosure
The newly designed DataTale RS-M2QO 2-Bay RAID System is a powerful RAID storage management device with flexible connectivity, hot swap support, and easy HDD access. The RS-M2QO offers flexible RAID storage management options: including RAID 0 (Striping), RAID 1 (Mirroring), and JBOD. The LED indicators provide easy verification of operating status. The trayless capability of the SmartGuiderTM provides a unique and easy way of HDD removal and installation - simply lift the handle to withdraw the HDDs. In addition, auto-limiting segmented screws are utilized to prevent over-tightening of the HDDs. Airflow is maximized due to the upright positioning and the high quality, quiet fans that exhaust air away from the internal HDDs, dramatically enhancing internal air flow. The thermally efficient aluminum also maintains optimal HDD operating temperature, prolonging the life of the HDDs. Using the powerful storage management of the DataTale is as easy as using a single bay external enclosure. Simply install the SmartGuiderTM handles onto the HDDs, set the RAID mode via the mode switch, select the HDD number via the HDD switch, connect the cables, and turn on the power for massive storage capacity, redundancy or instant real-time backups.

Bentley Background of purchase:I have an 8TB Windows Home Server machine that just wasn't always cooperating with my new iMac when it came to my iTunes library which includes about a terabyte of media that I stream to my Apple TV. Hassle-free redundancy is very important to me, so having mirrored hard drives was a must. Additionally, Firewire 800 was another requirement because there is nothing worse than transferring big files over USB 2.0 and, of course, the iMac doesn not have an eSATA port either. Looking at my options, this unit appeared to be the best bang for the buck that didn't look shoddy, even though the reviews at the time were not overwhelmingly positive- I decided to give it a shot despite not knowing the brand.Initial impressions:The build quality of this was the first thing I noticed. The brushed aluminum matches my iMac perfectly and the parts that are plastic appear to be very thick and sturdy. Even the handles for the hard drives are the same brushed aluminum- really nice. Even the packaging was above average- that is always a good sign when it comes to electronics- where cheap Chinese imports can be the norm. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that all the cables for the different connection options were included! I had tried searching to see if the cables (specifically Firewire 800) would be provided before making the incorrect assumption that they would not be (other units I've seen would only include a USB cable). I therefore picked up a Belkin cable with the order that I'll be returning.. it would be nice to have a comprehensive list of what is included, or atleast a photo of everything, seller!Setting up:This was extremely straight-forward to set up. The documentation was better than I had expected- including both a quick start guide and a full manual, though the full manual appears to still be fairly basic, although the functions of the unit are also basic I suppose. I threw in a pair of 2TB drives (formatted for Windows at the time)- 1 WD green and 1 Samsung something or other. Taking a glance at the documentation, I saw that the unit was already set to RAID 1 (mirrored) by default, so there was no need to flip the switch settings for me. After plugging it into my iMac via Firewire 800, the mac told me they couldn't be read and gave me the option to "initialize" them. I assumed this meant to format them for mac and I was correct- that option took me straight to the dick utility to create a new partition for mac. After about 30 seconds, I had a full 2TB of redundant drive space at my disposal! From unboxing to this point took all of 10 minutes, I would guess- with the majority of that time being spent screwing the 8 screws into my two drives.Performance:I left the file copying process going overnight and I didn't do any benchmarking of the speed, but it appeared very fast- no complaints there. Since then, it's been running great for the past couple of days. The fan is audible when I am within a few feet of the unit, but it is, thankfully, a very low pitched hum that is not at all distracting. I was hoping the fan would shut off when the drives spin down, but this doesn't appear to be the case. The only other minor nitpick is the brightness of the LEDs. While they aren't room-lighting, blindingly bright like other electronics I've had, they are still brighter than they need to be for a unit that is clearly meant to be displayed. I may look into covering them up to atleast dim them- it shouldn't be difficult.Overall I am very pleased with my purchase thus far and would highly recommend this for Mac users who want a small, attractive RAID 1 unit. I would not recommend this for JBOD mode considering the function for the drives to spin down when the Mac sleeps does not work. 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. By Makin Cents Everything about the housing is great except the connector that is extremely fragile. It did not take but a few plug-in/outs before hearing a dreadful snap that cracked the solder loosening the connector from the circuit board so now does not function. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Product By Ray I have a fast Seagate drive with solid state cache that I needed a high transfer rate enclosure for. I considered an external eSATA enclosure but ordered this one after verifying that my PC supports USB 3. I suspect that in the future, USB 3 ports will be more common than eSATA. The results are VERY good, this drive transfers data as fast as my internal SATA drives. Also comes with a handy screwdriver for installation and a padded protective cover. I didnt use the software as I don't have any use for it and would rather limit the programs I load on my PC. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well build, works, good package By T. Doan The package includes:USB3 CablesCD softwareSmall user manualThe caseA screw drive or mounting a hard driveCarrying pouch.Mounting is relatively easy. Well built, no visible gap anywhere. It looks high quality. The micro usb plug is strong, but not super strong, and as some people mentioned, it can be a weak point. Both USB 2 and USB3 works. Works out of the box in Windows 7.In Ubuntu Linux, 11.4 and 11.10, it works with some fixes (which is a good thing). This is probably not a problem with the drive, but a known issue with the kernel and uas handling. I got it to work by adding to the blacklist.conf (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf) an entry: blacklist uasI also run: sudo rmmod uas to get it to work in Linux.I think it's a bit heavier than another drive with aluminium case. It doesn't look bad, but the curve edge also doesn't give it a kick. However, buy it for functionality, not for look. But it does means it can slip off easily. Good thing they provide the a pouch for it.I didn't need to use both USB cable ends (for extra power) for my SSD drive. At the end, it works well. I don't know about the speed yet, but it maxed out my hard drive speed (approximately 61 MB/s). It would be good to see how fast it goes from 1 SSD drive to an external SSD drive. With good price and what I see so far, it's strongly recommended!UPDATE: After several months of using this, I burnt one case because of plug and unplug the USB cable. So it doesn't have good electrical protection there. The other case I use, I left in it most of the time. Downgrade to 4 stars. See all 20 customer reviews...
StarTech.com eSATA USB to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for Dual 2.5 or 3.5in HDD
This dual drive SATA HDD Dock provides fast, convenient access to 2.5” or 3.5" SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) hard drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD) through either USB or eSATA, without ever having to open a computer case or mount hard drives in an enclosure. Supporting one or two drives (tested with up to 4TB 3.5" and 1TB 2.5" drives per bay), SATADOCK22UE can be connected to the host computer through either USB 2.0 or eSATA - then, it''s just a matter of inserting the desired 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives (or combination of both) into one of the two (or both) docking station slots for instant access. "...the SATADOCK22UE is at the top of [the] heap when considering construction quality, ease of use and performance. Final Score: 9.0 out of 10."— BenchmarkReviews.comThe docking station supports plug and play installation on most operating systems, making it a perfect solution for data recovery, drive imaging, software testing, or any environment that requires fast access to massive amounts of data (uninstalled or archived hard drives etc.). Plus, SATADOCK22UE features a small form factor design that requires minimal desk space for permanent connection to the host computer and provides enough hard drive surface exposure to optimize dissipation of operating heat. SATADOCK22UE supports any 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drive and data transfer speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps (using eSATA) and 480Mbps (using USB 2.0) between host and dock - ensuring effortless data dumps or backups and hassle-free file transfers. The inclusion of a high-output power adapter versus other competitive dual drive dock models ensures stable performance for even the latest power hungry high-capacity hard drives. The value of this hard drive docking station can be extended, using a SATA to IDE hard drive adapter (SAT2IDEADP), which enables you to use any 2.5 or 3.5in IDE hard drive in a SATA hard drive dock slot.

Most helpful customer reviews 54 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Great utility, with minor exception. By SCF Having owned one of the Thermaltake BlackX versions of these type of docking solutions before, I was eager to try one of these new dual unit stations. These are a pretty solid product and I found them much cheaper (by about 25% or so) on Amazon than Newegg. The only negative I have in comparing this to my last docking station is that the Thermaltake was a snug fit. The 3.5" drive felt very secure and stable in it. There was no room for wiggling. This docking station is not as snug. In fact, once you've docked your drives in it, they can still wiggle if you nudge them. These do not detract significantly from the quality, but I would be more careful with placing them in an undisturbed area than before. If I had paid the full price Newegg and others were charging, it might be enough to make me return it and look for something with a tighter fit.I would absolutely not hesitate to recommend this to someone looking to attach extra storage, backup drives, or even someone like myself who has a shelf full of 3.5" drives that they only occasionally need to retrieve something from. It beats the solution I had years ago with two or three dozen large isolated external cases with power adapters, fans, ribbons, USB cables...Now... when does the triple and quadruple dock arrive? 38 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Great combination of features By bqb I wanted a dock with separate eSATA connectors for each drive rather than what I found in most docks--one eSATA connector with an internal port multiplier. With this dock I can connect each drive to a different computer, or use an operating system that doesn't support multipliers. Each drive gets the full available throughput with its dedicated connection. If you use USB, then both drives show up separately via the single USB connection. Drive performance using eSATA is not at all degraded, resulting in the same speed as my internal drives.I expected the drives to be a bit wobbly or insecure, but even newer shallow 3.5" drives fit well, as do 2.5" drives. I've been completely satisfied with this unit. It is larger than I expected having not carefully read the dimensions, but that lends to its stability. I still would have bought it.The drive power buttons are right to left (drive 1=right button, drive 2=left button), probably because of its country of origin. Not a problem. The eSATA connectors are solid, and the cables haven't given me a single problem. This is a great product for versatility without the need for trays.** Update after 1+ yearsStill an awesome unit, and I noticed the comment made regarding my review. The review is on the correct product--see the photo for the dual power buttons, and I rechecked the part number. Sounds like Amazon sent at least one person the wrong product. 37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. works as expected By Jong Lee Pros:-works great as plug and play with Win7-comes with 2 SATA cables and 1 USB Cable (only one needed for both HDD's)-AC cable comes with a brick-individual power buttons for each bayCons:-a tad large in size-power cable is a bit short See all 69 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 65 of 73 people found the following review helpful. WARNING!!! There are 2 versions of this product By WEC4104 I recently purchased this unit to be used with a SATA hard drive. Upon receiving it yesterday I discovered it only has an IDE style connector.I called Coolmax's tech support number, and was told that this unit was originally manufacturered in an IDE version, but they have since changed it over to a SATA interface, without changing the model number. (Nice, huh?) Apparently there are both versions floating around in the marketplace, and they even have the identical UPC bar code number. Coolmax tech support offered to ground ship me a different front face plate, to convert my unit over to SATA. But who knows how long that is going to take?If you read Amazon's product description for this unit (as of June 19, 2008) it says "SATA" in the title, but says "Interface: IDE" buried in the description.Since my Amazon order was placed through TigerDirect, I also contacted them to see what they might be able to do for me. They said their notes also indicate that some folks who wanted the IDE interface received the SATA instead. He said I could return my unit and reorder a new one, but there is still no guarantee which version I would receive the second time around. So if you place an order for this unit, be forewarned you have no control over which interface you will receive. There are alternative products you could buy instead, and save yourself the potential aggrevation.+++ Update Edit: After about five days I did receive the replacement panel from Coolmax. However, because of panel connection differences, the hard drive position inside the enclosure is different, and I had to drill four new holes in the aluminum box for mounting it. I'm up and running, but much more grief than necessary. Also, I see Amazon has now removed the previously mentioned IDE reference in the product description. 27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. cheap... and worth what you pay for By Felix Rabinovich First, the good part. It installs easily, and works right away. So, if you want a cheap enclosure for a drive that you want to salvage form that old computer that you are about to throw away - it maybe exactly what you are looking for. Now, for the disappointments. The biggest one is that it intermittently disconnects and reconnects - every 5-10 minutes. Often in the middle of I/O operations. Even during windows backup I hear click (off) and a few seconds later click again (on). Windows backup reports "backup couldn't complete. Write error". Usually, after 10-15GB of writing. Once it ran all the way to 80GB; but I was never able to finish the backup.Among smaller annoyances:The light only indicates that it is plugged in - not whether it's on or off. weird. Also, it is in the back - it's hard to see in typical setup. But since it's useless - it doesn't matter where it is.The cable is A-A, so if you lose it (or if the one that comes with it is two short) - it's not easy to grab a more typical A-B. Although if you need to buy one - the cost of A-A and A-B is about the same.Windows reports that I am plugging it into USB 1.1 port and that I can benefit from using USB 2.0. No other USB device plugged into this port produces this message (other USB drive, WebCam, USB mouse - nothing).Support is atrocious. First few emails got auto-generated response; then the live person came on, and blamed motherboard, USB drivers, Windows, California fires, but wasn't even considering troubleshooting the enclosure itself. Well, I guess for under $20 it's a gamble. 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Piece of Junk By luger I really wanted to like this product. I spent money on it and wanted it to work. But, after many months of dealing with its problems, I've decided to break up with it. I used this enclosure on a Linux Ubuntu system and downloaded and stored media on it. However, the enclosure would cause my hard

Fast response, reliable performance Experience the FAST Factor advantage. Using flash-assisted storage technology (FAST) you get solid-state performance, expansive capacity, and exceptional reliability in an all-in-one device. Momentus XT drives boot and perform like an SSD, up to 3x faster than a traditional HDD, with SATA 6Gb/s compatibility with NCQ for interface speed. The all-in-one design for simplicity and ease of installation makes the Momentus XT ideal for any laptop or PC, any OS, and any application. Delivers the speed of solid state memory with the storage benefits of a hard disk drive With FAST Factor Technology, You Get There Faster Why should a high-performance laptop or PC be slower than your tablet or smart phone? It shouldn't. The FAST Factor features of the Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive (SSHD) give you the instant-on response of solid state memory and the extremely large capacity of a hard drive. You get both the kick and the capacity that lets you consume, create and store at amazing speeds. The FAST Factor Advantage Changes the Game for Laptops and PCs In the past, the term "instant-on" could not be applied to a standard laptop or PC. That kind of speed was available only in systems few could afford or in tablet devices made for online browsing, not content creation. By contrast, the Momentus XT drive with FAST Factor technology is an affordable, well-designed SSHD that delivers the speed of solid state memory with the storage benefits of a hard disk drive (HDD). It has more data integrity and retention techniques than solid state drives (SSDs) or other combination solutions. Using flash-assisted storage technology (FAST) and Adaptive Memory technology, you get solid state performance, expansive capacity and exceptional reliability in an all-in-one device. All-in-One Simplicity The Momentus XT drive is the only all-in-one device that can deliver affordable SSD performance without compromising battery life, storage requirements, data integrity, integration complexity, or your pocketbook. FAST Factor Technology and Features FAST Factor boot technology will deliver the fastest boot possible. View larger Boot-Up Time Momentus XT drives are known for incredibly fast boot-up times, and now they are even better with FAST Factor boot technology. This system boot-up technique can reduce your boot time to mere seconds for a fast cold-boot start. It can cut your system start-up time by up to 65% over a traditional HDD. FAST Factor boot technology will deliver the fastest boot possible, whether you boot your system once a day or once a week. Your OS boot-up files are always there, ready to work. Adaptive Memory technology delivers SSD-like response from the applications you use most Flash Management Momentus XT solid state hybrid drives also implement a management feature that provides seamless integration between hardware, firmware and high-speed NAND flash while maintaining data integrity under all conditions--any system, any OS and with any driver. I really wanted 1TB, but 750GB will do for now. I have it in a MBP 15" with a second 1TB hard drive in my optical bay.Seagate had some problems with their 500GB hybrids, but seemed to get the issues worked out with new firmware (I never had a problem with mine). I haven't experienced any issues with the new 750GB either, but it will take time before I can comment on the reliability long term. I check my drives weekly for data corruption, and so far have found none, nor has there been stalling or other issues.Did I mention this drive was fast? 65 of 78 people found the following review helpful. Seagate Momentus 750 hybrid 2.5" hard drive- Finally a laptop spinning SATA III Hard Drive By PB Purchased this recently for a early 2011 MBP 17"-2.2GHZ 16 GB ram, Lion & Snow Leopard & data partitions (3 in all-in same order of creation) The drive replaces a Samsung 1TB 5400rpm drive- which had replaced the stock Toshiba/Apple 750 GB 5400 rpm drive. Formatting & copying the previous partitions on the Samsung to the new Seagate was done via SeriTek 6G expresscard while Seagate was still external. Installed after copying w/o event, booted fine. Apple system profiler show the Seagate drive connecting at the 6G speed- no issue's, not like the well reported 6G SSD connection trouble with early 2011 17" & some 15" MacBook Pro's. My 17" BTW was built in April 2011 & reports 6G in HD bay as well as in optical bay.The new Seagate is very quiet while copying outside the MBP. Not much info on outside of its case other than Seagate name/size of drive, manufacture date-11/2011, part/model/serial numbers, firmware-SM12 and rated @5V .70 amps. And made in CHINA (Amperage draw is lower than the Samsung 1 TB which is .85 amps & Toshiba/Apple 750 GB rated at 1.0 Amps. both of which are only 5400 rpm drives)Does not state speed, flash memory, or cache size, or SATA interface speed- which are 7200rpm, 8GB flash memory, 32MB cache & SATA III or otherwise known as 6G. Seagate did a pretty good job with current draw on drive compared to other laptop drives- inc. Samsung & Toshiba/Apple stock drive.I don't know how they are cramming all this stuff into a 2.5" form factor- but the Seagate weighs more than any of the 2.5" drives that I have here. The Seagate comes in at 3 7/8 oz.- somewhat heavier than the other 2.5" drives(I have). They weigh from 3 3/8- 3 1/2 ozThe previously installed 1TB 5400rpm-only 8MB cache Samsung was somewhat faster speed wise by the numbers overall than the stock Toshiba/Apple 750 GB 5400rpm drive it replaced. The Samsung was replaced early on during its first 30 days for pending failing sectors back in July. Some people were having trouble with that drive(Samsung 1TB 2.5") initially. The replacement Samsung has been fine ever since. I purchased it(the Samsung 1TB-2 platter) for the extra size- but really was waiting for at least a 750GB, 7200rpm w/larger cache & of course 6G - since the MBP early 2011 supported SATA III in the chipset. FINALLY Seagate does it.The new Seagate is in fact faster. Based on a variety of different tests & real time usage even with 3 partitions on it performance-wise it comes out around 15%- 25% faster over the Samsung & Toshiba/Apple drives based on the numbers. Boot time on my Lion 10.7.2 (which is a very loaded system, 138GB used-#1 of the 3 partitions on drive) went down from around 52 seconds from the sound of the chime to login screen- to 30 seconds from chime to login. Aperture launches 180 GB (1st launch after boot, non referenced, stored within Aperture library) within a few seconds. That to me is fairly impressive, probably half the time the Samsung needed to do same. Time on battery feels better also. Sitting around on battery while surfing web-doing nothing really intensive other than Firefox using 1GB

I was glad to find a dependable drive for a great price. 80GB isn't a lot these days, but for a notebook it works just fine. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. As mentioned previously, the "cooling fins" don't actually touch the drive and are for decoration only. Despite this, ventilation shouldn't be a problem as the front grill is perforated and there are open slots on the rear. There is no separate power cable or power input, but if your USB 3.0 port is to spec it should have no problem powering a 2.5" hard drive on its own.I would have liked to see some kind of sound dampening (perhaps a more tightly sealed case or rubber mounts) and the LED, as it is, is not really aligned with the cutout in the case, which means that while you'll see the LED light, it's not very clear. 12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Top Quality By hrrmph I've used dozens of 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drive enclosures in the past 5 years. This Oyen USB 3.0, 2.5-inch drive form factor, 12.5mm drive height enclosure has the best build quality of any of the enclosures I've used and is my favorite. It is a little thicker to make room for the 12.5mm height drives.I tested this model with a 500GB 7200RPM 9.5mm height hybrid drive and a 1.0TB 5400RPM 12.5mm height hard drive. I connected the enclosure to USB 2.0 ports on an HP notebook using WinXP Pro SP3 and an Asus notebook running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit using the supplied 14-inch long USB 3.0 cable and it works fine on both machines with either hard drive. The enclosure has no provision for an external power supply, so I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough power for the drives when connected to the USB 2.0 ports. However, the ports on both notebook computers proved to have enough juice for these large capacity, high speed 2.5 inch drives in the un-powered enclosure (as long as only one enclosure was used with the Buffalo ExpressCard adapter that I was using).I would guess that the Oyen enclosure did it's part by being reasonably power efficient. Integrated USB 3.0 ports (non-ExpressCard) are specced to provide even more power than USB 2.0 ports, so power should be even less of a concern when using an integrated USB 3.0 port.To test these further, I installed a Buffalo Technology IFC-EC2U3/UC ExpressCard USB 3.0 2-port adapter on the HP notebook computer (see my review of the Buffalo adapter). The adapter could only power 1 un-powered enclosure (such as this one), while it could handle 2 enclosures if one or both of them was an externally powered model with a power supply plugged into the wall.I tested the enclosure while the 1TB drive was installed. I connected it to one of the USB 3.0 ports on the Buffalo Technology adapter and it works fine when only one un-powered drive enclosure is connected. However, when 2 un-powered drive enclosures are connected, neither of the drives in the enclosures worked with the Buffalo ExpressCard. Adding supplemental power to the Buffalo ExpressCard failed. As a side note, I connected 2 Sans Digital powered 3.5in USB 3.0 enclosures to the ExpressCard adapter and they did work. So if you plan to use an ExpressCard adapter to power 2 enclosures, you might want to choose an adapter other than Buffalo, or buy powered enclosures instead of these. The USB 3.0 capability of this Oyen enclosure and adapter should give a significant performance boost when transferring lots of data. There's not much needed for instructions with an enclosure, but the one's that are provided by Oyen are top-notch. The packaging, descriptions, diagrams, and specifications are excellent.I just wish Oyen had designed these with a receptacle to allow attaching an external power supply so I could get the needed juice to allow 2 enclosures to be attached my Buffalo ExpressCard. I will try getting another brand of ExpressCard to see if it works better with these.UPDATE:I switched my ExpressCard adapter out from a Buffalo branded one to an Oyen branded one. Everything works great now
